Duck Real Estate Listings
Duck, North Carolina got its’ unusual name due to the large numbers of waterfowl that once flocked to the area during migratory season. This small resort village is located on the north end of the Outer Banks. It is a peaceful residential area, well known for having some of the best beaches on the Atlantic Coast. Some say it’s a town with a split personality; on one hand it’s nothing more than a sleepy little town perfect for those seeking a quiet beachside vacation. On the other hand, it’s a lively area packed with as much as possible into such a small community. Many who stay elsewhere on the Outer Banks often make a point to visit Duck to stroll through the shops and eat. A mile long stretch through the center of town is lined with boutiques, unique gift shops, cafes and restaurants. There are no hotels in town, but many rental cottages are available and one bed & breakfast inn.
Although quiet in nature, Duck has plenty of activities. The soundside north area offers kayaking, parasailing, jet skiing, boating, sailing and windsurfing. There is a bike path that runs the entire length of the village that can also be used for walking, biking, and kids on trikes and inline skating. Early morning you will usually see lots of people jogging, running and power walking along the bike path. Kite flying is another popular beach activity – fun for kids as well as adults. Just north of town is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research Pier, a fascinating world-renowned coastal research facility that is open to the public for tours. The facility was created to study the processes of the surrounding barrier islands, and over the years has collected a wealth of data during hurricanes and Nor’easters.
Duck is a relatively new vacation destination. Thirty years ago there were only a handful of locals, a few rustic vacation cottages scattered around the dunes and one gas station. In the 1980s, things started looking up for the tiny village. The vacation homes came first, then the shops, restaurants and recreational opportunities. Duck wasn't even an official town until 2002, but now it's a full-fledged vacation destination that offers everything you need for a great time at the beach.
