🌀 Outer Banks Hurricane Erin Update

Hatteras Island Closed To Traffic & Beach Erosion Worsens

As of this morning, Hurricane Erin has reached its peak intensity across the Outer Banks, bringing widespread impacts to our coastal communities. Here’s what you need to know:

🚫 Hatteras Island Closed to All Traffic

Due to heavy ocean overwash and extensive flooding, NC Highway 12 is closed, and access to Hatteras Island is suspended for the next several days. Local villages are experiencing water intrusion, and emergency crews are working around the clock to assess damage and maintain safety.

🚙 Corolla 4×4 Area Evacuated

Yesterday, the 4×4 area in Corolla was evacuated as the beach became completely impassable. This precautionary measure was taken to protect residents and visitors in one of the most vulnerable stretches of the northern Outer Banks.

🌬️ Wind & Erosion from Corolla to Nags Head

From Corolla to Nags Head, sustained winds of 30–50 mph are hammering the coastline. While rainfall has been minimal, the beaches are taking a beating, with significant erosion has reported in multiple locations. Oceanfront properties are particularly at risk during this phase of the storm.

🌊 High Tide & Soundside Flooding Threat

We still face two more high tide cycles—this evening and tomorrow morning—that could bring additional damage to oceanfront areas. As Hurricane Erin begins to shift northward, soundside flooding is possible, especially in low-lying areas like Hatteras Island, Colington, Manteo, and the Roanoke Sound shoreline.
