OBX Hot Sand Alert: When the Beach Heats Up

There’s nothing quite like a summer day on the Outer Banks—the salt air, the ocean breeze, and that unmistakable crunch of flip-flops on sand. But there’s one thing beachgoers might overlook until it’s too late: scorching hot sand.  The picture above was from June 18th 2025 from the Kitty Hawk Police Department. The sand temperature that day was 139 degrees!!!

Why Does the Sand Get So Hot?

The Outer Banks’ sun-drenched beaches are beautiful, but that Carolina sunshine means business. Without shade or vegetation, the sand acts like a heat sponge. On peak summer days, air temps may hover in the 80s or 90s, but sand surface temps can soar past 120°F, especially in the midday hours.

What’s the Risk?

Hot sand isn’t just uncomfortable—it can cause serious burns, particularly for children, pets, and anyone with sensitive skin. Even a few seconds of barefoot contact can lead to first-degree burns. If it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for your pup.

How to Beat the Heat

Here are a few savvy ways to keep your beach day safe and enjoyable:

– Bring beach shoes or flip-flops: Even for short walks from your towel to the water.
– Use beach mats or towels to create shaded spots.
– Limit barefoot strolls to early morning or late afternoon when sand temps drop.
– Test the sand with your hand or the back of your foot before letting kids or pets loose.

Stay safe out there this summer when you are visiting the Outer Banks and the beach!
